Nurse Edith Cavell
1939 · Movie · 96 min · ★ 6.6
Anna Neagle stars in this biopic of English nurse and First World War martyr Edith Cavell. Matron of a small private hospital in German-occupied Brussels during WWI, Cavell makes no distinction between the civilian casualties, Allied troops and German soldiers brought in for treatment. However, her sympathy for the plight of the Belgians leads her to become involved with a secret underground resistance movement that helps refugees and escaped prisoners of war to cross the border into neutral Holland. When the German high command becomes suspicious of her activities, Cavell is branded a spy and faces execution by firing squad.
